It seemed like summer would never come and now it is almost over.
On one hand, it’s sad that summer break is coming to an end. On the other hand, the kids could use some structure, and this tired mom could use a break. So before the kids head back to school here are a few things to do together before school starts.
Spend a night hanging out together
While summer is less hectic in our house, each of us does our own thing. Take a few minutes and schedule time to hang out together. Plan an evening together. Choose a movie to watch, make a meal together and hang out – without cell phones or other distractions.
Play a Game
Finding time for a family game night will be much harder once school starts. We are very competitive in our household and games like Sorry, Jenga or Uno result in a lot of smack talking. It always makes for a fun night. If your kids are teenagers try the game Ok, Boomer… It has made for some of the funniest game nights we have ever had. You can also make invite friends over and hold a summer games competition.
Get to the water
There’s something about spending an afternoon at the water that makes people unwind and relax. Summer and water go together like Macaroni and Cheese. Hit up the local pools or splash pads, hit the beaches, head to any of the water parks, or visit any of the natural springs for some fun. You can check out our list of local swimming pools and splash pads on the Aquatics Resource Page.
Be a tourist in your own county
One of my favorite things about Polk County is exploring the downtowns in all the cities. Downtown Bartow is like walking in a Hallmark movie. Downtown Lakeland has a great variety of stores, Downtown Lake Wales is beautiful and Downtown Winter Haven is my favorite spot. Hit up the local stores, explore what’s there and maybe try out a new restaurant. You may find your new favorite spot.
Go to a drive-in
Nothing says summer like an outdoor movie under the stars. Make your own “theater” outside by showing a movie on your garage door. Or take a drive to Lakeland and visit the Silvermoon Drive-In. Don’t forget the popcorn and candy! Our Sheet Pan S’mores are perfect for an outdoor treat.
Remember we only have 18 summers together before the kids venture off on their own…. Take the time to make the memories!
