Did you know there are two national donut days? One is celebrated on the first Friday in June and the other on November 5th. Lucky us!
On this day we celebrate this delicious treat as well as the Salvation Army Lassies. The Lassies volunteered to go to the front lines and boost morale by serving home-cooked meals and treats during World War I. Two Salvation Army Lassies, Ensign Margaret Sheldon, and Adjutant Helen Purviance – began frying donuts in soldiers’ helmets. Nicknamed “Donut Lassies,” the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops (nicknamed “doughboys”) returned home from war.
