Florida's Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday - Polk County Moms

It’s that time of year! Time to get ready for the upcoming hurricane season. This year the Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday runs from June 1, 2024 to June 14, 2024. This is the perfect time to stock up on essentials to help you throughout the season.

 The sales tax holidays do not apply to:
• Commercial purchases of eligible pet evacuation supplies
• Sales within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport
• The rental of any of the eligible items listed below

First off, you need to determine what supplies you have and what items you need in case of a hurricane or tropical storm. The list below is the Basic Disaster Supplies Kit from the federal government.

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and an NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Now that you have an inventory of what you need to purchase or replenish you have until June 14th to buy the items sales tax-free.

Sales price of $20 or less: • Reusable ice (reusable ice packs)

Sales price of $40 or less: Any portable, self-powered light source* (powered by battery, solar, hand-crank, or gas):
• Candles
• Flashlights
• Lanterns

Sales price of $50 or less:
• Any gas or diesel fuel container, including LP gas and kerosene containers

Batteries, including rechargeable batteries, listed sizes only (excluding automobile and boat batteries): • AAA-cell • AA-cell • C-cell• D-cell • 6-volt • 9-volt

Portable Radios* (powered by battery, solar, or hand-crank)
• Two-way • Weather band

Sales price of $60 or less:
• Coolers and ice chests (food storage; nonelectrical)
• Portable power banks

Sales price of $70 or less:
• Carbon monoxide detectors
• Fire extinguishers
• Smoke detectors or smoke alarms

Sales price of $100 or less:
• Bungee cords
• Ground anchor systems
• Ratchet straps
• Tarpaulins (tarps)
• Tie-down kits
• Visqueen, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, and other flexible waterproof sheeting

Sales price of $3,000 or less:
• Portable generators used to provide light or communications, or to preserve food in the
event of a power outage

NOAA & Alert Polk – it is essential to be aware of what is going on during the storm. Register for Alert Polk   NOAA Weather Radio Frequencies for Polk: 162.500 and 162.550 MHz
