From becoming a mother at 17 to building a life filled with love, adventure, and business success, Darlene has lived a life worth sharing. Married for 38 years and a mother of four grown children, Darlene’s journey has taken her from small family moments to exploring the world. Today, she helps others create their own adventures through her business, Smarra Dream Vacations.
I met Darlene earlier this year and was instantly drawn to her. You know how some people just put you at ease the moment you meet them? That’s Darlene. She’s funny, kind, and a little sarcastic with just the right amount of bluntness—which I appreciate. Her compassion really stands out, especially in her constant efforts to support programs and nonprofits that help girls in need. Darlene’s love for travel is rivaled only by her love for her family. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with her and her husband, Steven; their love and respect for each other are so clear and genuine.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: My name is Darlene Smarra, and I am the proud owner of Smarra Dream Vacations. My journey started early, becoming a mother at 17, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Life has been a beautiful adventure, and I’ve been blessed to be married for 38 years, still going strong. Together, we’ve raised four wonderful children, who are now grown and thriving.
My passion for travel blossomed from a weekend trip to Puerto Rico with my husband, where we had no idea what to expect. That trip sparked a lifelong love for travel and led me to start Smarra Dream Vacations to help others create unforgettable memories with their loved ones. When I’m not planning dream vacations, I love reading, scrapbooking, hiking, and exploring new destinations.
Q: How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?
A: I have four incredible children. My oldest daughter, Jessica, and my son, Steven II, both served in the Navy, which helped shape their futures. Both earned master’s degrees in therapy, and watching them thrive has been a joy. My third child, Christopher, built a beautiful family of his own and blessed me with two grandchildren. My youngest, Brandon, is an entrepreneur with his own online business. They are all in their 30s now, and I couldn’t be prouder of who they’ve become.
Q: How did your business come about? What has been your biggest challenge?
A: Smarra Dream Vacations came about from my love for travel. After a few incredible trips with my family, I realized how much joy I found in planning these experiences, and I wanted to help others create their own adventures. One of the most heartwarming aspects of my work is planning trips that celebrate life’s special moments—like the recent European trip I organized for a family celebrating their daughter’s 16th birthday. Those little touches, like adding surprises, make a huge difference.
One of the biggest challenges is finding people who share my passion for travel and want to take it to the next level. But one of my greatest successes has been mentoring others, like Sheri, who went on to become a franchise owner. Helping people pursue their dreams is what makes all the hard work worth it.
Q: What do you love about living in Polk County?
A: I love the growing sense of community and diversity in Polk County. It’s inspiring to see small businesses coming together to support one another. The collaboration, connection, and shared commitment to lifting each other up make Polk County such a special place.
Q: What’s your favorite place to be in Polk County?
A: My favorite place to be is the Proud Lion Center, where I meet with other small business owners every Tuesday morning. We build meaningful relationships, offer support, and learn from one another. It’s a space where we uplift one another, creating a true sense of community.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
A: “Be The Best You.” Simple, but powerful. It reminds me to stay true to myself and to always strive for personal growth, not perfection.
Q: What is your everyday style?
A: My everyday style is casual. I love being comfortable while still feeling confident. Whether I’m running errands or meeting clients, I prefer an easygoing outfit that allows me to tackle whatever comes my way.
Q: What is your ultimate goal?
A: My ultimate goal is to continue growing Smarra Dream Vacations and eventually open a nonprofit for women. I want to create a space where women can be empowered to embrace the best version of themselves, free from societal pressures. Last year, I hosted the first EmpowHer conference for Women’s Month, and I’m already planning next year’s event. It’s important to me to give back and help women shine in their own unique ways.
Q: What inspires you?
A: My family is my greatest inspiration. Everything I do is rooted in setting a strong example for my kids. I want them to see their mom living her best life, constantly striving to be better and stay true to who I am. By pursuing my dreams, I hope to inspire them to chase their own with passion and authenticity.
Darlene Smarra’s love for travel began with a spontaneous trip to Puerto Rico, inspiring her to turn her passion into a thriving business. Now, through Smarra Dream Vacations, she helps families, couples, and solo travelers create once-in-a-lifetime experiences filled with cherished memories.
